Spring Weekend Concert Announced Fabolous and Lloyd Banks One of the biggest events of the spring at MIT is always Spring Weekend, and the highlight of the weekend is the annual Spring Concert, where a national musical act performs on campus. The headliners for this years Spring Concert will be hip hop stars Fabolous and Lloyd Banks, both East Coast rappers who call New York City home. You may know Fabolous from his songs such as I Cant Deny It and Breathe, and you may know Lloyd Banks from 50 Cents crew G Unit. The concert will be on the Friday of Spring Weekend, April 22. While there are always awesome concerts in Boston, its pretty exciting to have an awesome concert a minute from your dorm. Previous Spring Concerts have featured Live, Slick Rick, Jurassic 5, Sugar Ray, Spin Doctors, Blues Traveler, They Might Be Giants, Busta Rhymes, The Roots, Sonic Youth, Violent Femmes, Belly, Jesus Jones, Fishbone, and 10,000 Maniacs. Spring Weekend (teaser site here) has other cool events. On the Friday afternoon of every Spring Weekend, youll find the International Fair (or I-Fair), where the many international student groups of MIT show off their food, drink, dress, dance, music and other traditions. Its one of my favorite events of the year. Two events being wrapped into Spring Weekend for the first time this year (though both occur annually) are the Fierce Forever drag show on Thursday night, and a Holi celebration on Sunday (see photos and videos of previous Holi celebrations). Should be a pretty awesome weekend.

Just as insight into the mind of the artist may be gained by examining and comparing the progression of his work, so knowledge of the mind of the serial killer can be ascertained by an examination of his canvas: The murder scene. Forensic profiling is the attempt to do just that. An investigator tries to discern information about the killer based on the information at the crime scene, deducing information about the cause from the effect. This is not an exact science, and has been often likened to an art. It is the goal of this work to provide the reader with a basic understanding of the function and application of forensic psychology, as well as an explication of some of its strengths and weaknesses. Is the killer meticulous or chaotic? What motives does the killer hold? Applied properly, this allows investigators to narrow down the suspect pool. As stated earlier, however, this should not be applied to the exclusion of all other information. A second assumption made is that the method of operation will remain similar. This is not to say that the killer may refine their methods or change in severity, but as the killer progresses, the chosen M.O. will be recognizable. Weapon choice, for instance, or victimology will retain similar traits throughout each killing. This allows investigators to be sure that crime scenes are the product of the same killer. The third assumption upon which profiling relies is the idea that the serial killer’s signature will remain the same. A signature is the â€Å"unique manner in which he or she commits crimes† (Holmes, 1998, p. 180). This is not to be confused with the method of operation. The distinction is in the unique nature of the signature. The method of operation is not unique to a particular killer who, say, attacks prostitutes. However, if said killer were to shave the head of each victim and tattoo her scalp, then that would be his signature. A major problem facing society today Is the Impact that the growing number of inmates serving sentences have on the economic vitality of our nation. The problem has been exacerbated because our Jails are not only filled with first time-offenders but with a large population of repeat offenders, those returned to prison because nee were unmade to malting a crime-Tree Testily rater Deluge released. According to the Bureau of Justice (2000), in the United States released prisoners were re-arrested at an average rate that was greater than 60%. The high percentage of re-arrested former prisoners is a clear indication that Just serving one’s sentence is not a deterrent to committing more criminal acts. The economic cost to society and to those directly affected by criminal activity is tremendous. According to the Bureau of Justice (2000), one of every fifteen people in the U. S. Will be incarcerated. That figure is staggering. During the past 25 years, the penal system in the United States has implemented a strategy of â€Å"lock ‘me up and throw away the key. † As a result, there has been an unprecedented growth in the prison population in the number of incarcerated inmates even though the crime rate has been decreasing. Further exacerbating the situation is that incredibly high rate of recidivism. According to the Three State Recidivism Study (Stouter, Smith, and Tracy, 2001) released inmates reported that less than half had a Job awaiting them after they were freed from prison. While most (about 87% of those who had received training hill in prison and 83% of those who did not participate in training) believed that they had a place to stay after they were released, the remainder were released as homeless, left to roam the streets, mostly in urban areas. The economic cost of incarceration and the cost to society of criminal activity, plus the lost wages due to imprisonment of convicted workers and the cost of providing welfare for their families is creating a substantial burden on local, state and federal budgets. The combination of rising costs multiplied by an ever greater number of incarcerated inmates is putting pressure on the penal system to find an alternative, deter strategy for success after release. Students can either have all of the images to annotate or the images can be passed around the room where each group contributes to each image. Students should be encouraged to consider the images literally and metaphorically. †¢ Once the images have been annotated, ask students to draw links between images. Are there any similarities e. g. power, authority, establishment, tradition etc? Students should justify their points. Introduction †¢ Using Resource H, model for the students how to explicate the presentation of influence and society. Analysis should consider faith, community, wealth, status, belief, power and influence. Invite pupils to contribute whilst leading the analysis. Using Resource I, students should place generated keywords in one of the circles and identify quotes to support a point e. g. Influence = ‘best Big Man’. Encourage students to consider what the opposing circle could hold e. g. weakness vs. influence. Development †¢ Using Resource J, students should work in pairs to explore the extract. Ask students to consider how themes are at play in this extract. Students should consider oppression, loss, denial, weakness, death etc †¢ Once the independent analysis has been completed, students should add new information to the overlapping circles with quotations to support. Ask students to consider the links between the extracts and explain their additions to the overlapping circles. Linking back to the crisis and conflict that Kambili has experienced, (explored through the previous sequence of teaching) ask pupils to consider this in the light of the conflict that is presented through the text extracts from this teaching sequence. What are the metaphorical links between Kambili’s struggle for identity and the conflicts that exist within the society that Adichie presents. †¢ P rovide the students with another copy of Resource I. The students should place the points that are in opposition for Kambili e. g. paternal love vs. love for Father Amadi in different boxes. The wives of the umunna took the leftover food, even the cooked rice and beans that Mama said were spoiled, and they knelt in the backyard dirt to thank Papa and Mama. The gate man waved with both hands over his head as we drove off. His name was Haruna, he had told Jaja and me a few days before, and in his Hausa-accented English that reversed P and F, he told us that our pather was the best Big Man he had ever seen, the best emfloyer he had ever had. Did we know our pather faid his children’s school pees? Did we know our pather had helfed his wipe get the messenger job at the Local Government oppice? We were lucky to have such a pather. Papa started the rosary as we drove onto the expressway. We had driven for less than half an hour when we came to a checkpoint; there was a traffic jam, and policemen, many more than was usual, were waving their guns and diverting traffic. We didn’t see the cars involved in the accident until we were in the thick of the jam. One car had stopped at the checkpoint, and another had rammed into it from behind. It was the worst one since they became commonplace some years ago. The students had set the sole administrator’s house on fire; even the guest house behind it had burned to the ground. According to Willamette University, Thirteen percent of male and five percent of female college students nationwide are alcoholics. Many people associate drinking with social environments. Why? This is because alcohol takes the edge off and allows one to relax. It allows someone to let go and enjoy ones self around others. Another attraction is that drinking allows one to unwind and temporarily separate themselves from the demands of life. What people dont think about is how this can affect them in the long run. A major effect of alcohol is impaired judgment. This can lead to severe consequences. Not only car accidents and other bad decisions, but long term alcohol abuse can cause cancer, heart attack, high blood pressure and can increase the risk of breast cancer in women. People develop a high tolerance to alcohol when they drink a great deal over an extended length of time, which means that you need m ore for a buzz. More alcohol means more money. Another common fancy among those who frequent parties is Marijuana. Marijuana is commonly smoked. How Itching Works and Why Scratching an Itch Feels Good Humans and other animals itch for a variety of reasons. Scientists believe the underlying purpose of the annoying sensation (called pruritus) is so we can remove parasites and irritants and protect our skin. However, other things can lead to itching, including drugs, diseases, and even a psychosomatic response. How Itching Works While drugs and disease typically stimulate itching because of a chemical response, most of the time the sensation is a result of skin irritation. Whether the irritation starts from dry skin, a parasite, an insect bite, or chemical exposure, the itch-sensing nerve fibers (called pruriceptors) become activated. International marketing is often not as simple as marketing your product to more than one nation. Companies have to consider language barriers, ideals, and customers in the market they approaching. Since organizations and companies vary in terms of size, membership of the industry and the competitive strategy of that particular industry and their executives which vary in terms of their characteristic even different organizations may perceive and respond to the same marketing environmental patterns differently hence giving a hint of serious implications and challenges for organizational actions and performance. Furthermore, many existing literature supports the view that top managers need to deal with the impact of the industry environment and that of globalization in a judicial frame. (J10) Regardless where the firm belongs it will be on the path towards globalization, hence it must respond to the forces shaping the global environment and the marketing challenges they present. The nature of the marketing challenges is precise and it continues to change and the form they will take in the twenty-first century remains most uncertain. It is however clear that to be successful in the future as well in the present scenario the firm must be an even more astute marketer than in the past. An effective global strategy depicts the necessity to respond quickly and appropriately to opportunities and challenges locally and internationally. (J10) Ethics in international marketing: It is accepted that the wave of globalization is an unavoidable process and will progress forever. All business that firms desire to compete successfully in international environment has to obey to the legal and ethical rules and regulations. So to behave in an ethically and socially responsible manner there should be a hallmark of every marketer`s behaviour, domestically or internationally Hence it requires little thought for most of us to know the social responsibility and or ethically correct response to questions about breaking the law, destroying the environment, denying someones rights, taking unfair advantage, or behaving in a manner that would bring bodily harm or damage. The best guide to good international marketing ethics is: Do not direct intentional harm. Produce more good than harm for the host country. Respect the rights of employees and of all others affected by one`s actions or policies. To the extent consistent with ethical norms, respect the local culture and work with and not against it. Multinationals should pay their fair share of taxes and cooperate with the local governments in developing equitable laws and other background institutions E-marketing a new paradigm in international marketing: The introduction of e-marketing or e-business creates a fundamental shift in the behavior of consumers and the strategies of international marketing. It also adds to an increase level of complexity to the arena of international marketing. However, the specific infrastructure for e-marketing strategies of a country for its different stages suggests us for targeted strategic development of e-business implementation in different countries. (J22) E-marketing is different in terms from general marketing strategies. The market is open for all and uses a very wide platform i.e. the internet, so cultural differences; environmental factors are not taken into consideration often. The primary advantages of e-marketing which gives an edge over traditional formulas of marketing is reducing costs and enhancing reach. The cost of the platform for e-marketing is typically lower than the other marketing platforms such as face-to-face salespeople or middlemen/distributors. E-marketing platforms increase the boundaries for reach and reduce the costs by providing three areas of advantage for customers. First, the marketing firm can provide unlimited information to customers where there is no requirement of human capital. Second, the e-marketing firms can create customized information for individual customers that allow customers to choose and design products and services that meet their specific requirements. Finally, e-marketing platforms c an allow transactions between customers and firms which again typically do not require human capital; there are virtual modes of communication and payments. (J22) Role of branding in international marketing: Branding has tremendous potential for international marketing. However, this potential has not been fulfilled for a number of reasons. Much of the analysis and commentary are at normative level, which debates the relative merits of a global versus local approach to international branding. Additionally, the relatively few empirical studies states that global branding often take a narrow approach to branding, as narrow as just the brand name. These limitations presents the point of separation from the current study that takes a more comprehensive and strategic approach to the role of branding in the market that goes international. The pivotal role of international marketing strategy is acknowledged as a driving force in internationalisation. Using such a pivot, makes a reference to performance measure which is included in the recognition of the role of branding in assessing international performance. Further, a new approach is developing in terms of how branding contributes to more eff ective marketing strategy. Specifically, there are two mechanisms that are added beyond what the existing global branding literature has considered. Firstly, light is thrown on branding-related managerial cognition, which is termed as brand orientation. Secondly, international brand repositioning is also considered as a contributor to the performance.. Export managers and researchers are mostly concerned with basic aspects of firm survival in the international business arena which relates to product quality while overlooking some important points like product innovation and relationship management. Firms that have established or have good relationship with their importers are more likely to realize the potential of their product and the market. Relationship capabilities enable firms to improve the product, come out with innovation hence enhancing the product quality which altogether turns into good export performance enhancement. (J15) Standardizing global marketing strategy: As there have been differences in the thoughts and interpretations of what standardization is, there have also been differences among researchers on the advantages or disadvantages of standardization, and whether standardization is an appropriate strategy or not. The main argument is in favour of standardization which states that the forces of globalization driven by technology were homogenizing markets and that marketers needs to take advantage of this trend by following a standardized marketing strategy. Also primarily focussing on Triad market consisting of the USA, Japan, and Europe suggested that these markets are fairly homogeneous and since these markets were amongst the major markets in terms of share for the world economy that it was concluded that a strategy of standardization was the appropriate one to follow. (J26) The concept of strategic fit provides the theoretical foundation for the study of performance consequences of international marketing standardization. The strategic fit paradigm explains the necessity of maintaining a consistent link between the strategy of the firm and the context within which the strategy has been implemented. The concept of strategic fit has played a key role in development of strategic management and organization theory fields. According to the author branding is an important part of International marketing strategies but it cannot be a success measure for the business or cannot be used for in success when a product is launched internationally. According to us the literature holds a bit of contradiction as branding may not always work but there are cases where the brand name of the product drives it success whether its in a local market or in overseas. (J24) Export market orientation (EMO) behaviour which relates to export success and it shares a positive linear equation between them. (J13). It actually holds a lot relevance and export market orientation can be equated to the basic foundation of the export business. Where they make analysis on the different markets, different customer trends , different product analysis. It gives and covers all the areas of Political, Environmental, Societal, Technological, Legal and Environmental scenarios and analysis for a successful export trade. The average of all the above factors gives the company or its product the degree of internationalization that it has got. Mainly focussing on Triad market consisting of the USA, Japan, and Europe suggested that these markets are fairly homogeneous and since these markets were amongst the major markets in terms of share for the world economy that it was concluded that a strategy of standardization was the appropriate one to follow. Standardizing global marketing strategies might not always work as each market is new, as the nation is new and hence a rule of thumb which works for the triad might not work with other markets. Although a standardized marketing approach can be obtained on generic products like wheat, flour or petroleum but commodities that holds a niche value might not respond to the theory of standardizing global markets. Globalisation has already changed many of the world economies and obviously there needs to have a strategic fit where businesses should be knowing the key to sourcing the strategy and sourcing the attributes and also finding out the superiority of each other.
